Edinburgh Employers Transport Planning Focus Group

• Size of business:
• Kind of funding: Advice/Consultancy

Edinburgh Employers Transport Planning Focus Group, co-ordinated by Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce and Enterprise is the first initiative of its kind in Scotland. A group of high-profile Edinburgh employers meet regularly to look at ways of reducing congestion caused by their employees commuting to work.

Recognising that parking difficulties and road congestion are now very real issues which are beginning to affect business efficiency, these companies have developed a simple set of actions aimed at facilitating travel to work by suggesting alternatives to the single occupancy car, such as public transport, cycling, walking, car-sharing and pool cars. Commonly known as Green Commuter Plans, such plans can be developed at little or no cost and, in some cases, can generate financial savings. Methods of reducing unnecessary business travel are also examined.

The Group is willing to share their expertise with other companies.

Freight Facilities Grant (FFG)

• Size of business:
• Kind of funding: Grant

The FFG scheme, administered in Scotland by The Scottish Office offers grant assistance for rail and inland waterway projects. Under the scheme, grants are made available to contribute to capital costs of rail or inland waterway freight infrastructure and equipment in cases where traffic would normally go by road, and where it is deemed environmentally worthwhile to keep lorries off unsuitable roads. FFG is not a subsidy. It is designed to address the commercial imbalance between road and rail/inland waterway costs by assisting with the initial associated costs for later.

Eligible businesses
Producers of freight traffic, handlers or potential handlers of freight.

Scheme conditions
* that transport of freight by rail/inland waterway is not economically viable without grant
* the project will realise enough environmental benefits to justify grant
* there is no obligation to use rail/inland waterway, and
* the applicant has not let contracts or started works before grant is approved.
