The Excellence in Edinburgh Initiative

The quality hallmark Excellence in Edinburgh has been set up by the Economic and Estates Development Service of the City of Edinburgh Council as a brand identity for the City to underpin the promotion of excellence in all areas of endeavour. Within the framework of the Edinburgh Business Support Partnership, the Chamber of Commerce and Enterprise has endorsed and is an active participant in the initiative. The initiative focuses attention on business performance and aims to provide Edinburgh's innovative business community with a visible sign of their own excellence.

Excellence in Edinburgh intends to provide an exciting and forward-looking way of reinforcing and promoting the City's image of excellence and that of its quality businesses.

Eligible businesses
All organisations from public, private and voluntary sectors whose premises are situated within the City of Edinburgh limits and who wish to be associated with the City's established reputation of excellence.

Scheme conditions
Prospective members must complete a business excellence self-assessment model. Membership is granted on meeting the required standard of accreditation for business excellence. There is an annual membership fee.

The European Community provides grants towards the capital costs of projects for the processing and marketing of agricultural produce.

The scheme is competitive and not all applications will be successful. The scheme will close to applications on
31 December 1999.

A similar scheme for fisheries and aquaculture produce closed to applications on 31 December 1998.

Replacements for these schemes are being drawn up by the European Commission but will not open to applications until 2000.

Marketing Development Scheme

The Marketing Development Scheme aims to encourage a more market-oriented agricultural industry by helping farmers improve their marketing expertise and promoting collaboration. A 50% grant is available towards a range of non-capital costs for projects approved under the Scheme. Eligible costs include feasibility studies and market research, salaries of key staff, the production and dissemination of promotional material, promotional events, training for directors and key staff members and the expenses of outside directors.

The maximum total grant for an individual project is £150,000. The total funds available under the Scheme each year are cash limited, and not all eligible projects may receive a grant.

Eligible businesses
Individuals, groups or companies involved in agriculture, horticulture or food marketing groups involving collaborating producers, or involving producers collaborating with others in the production chain; individual farmers or growers; manufacturers with a turnover of less than £100m; trade associations or industry bodies.

Scottish Management Projects (SMP) Collaborative Marketing Scheme

SMP is a university company within the Strathclyde Business School that was established in 1986 to provide short-term marketing assistance for Scottish-based companies, utilising te services of professional marketers from the Business School, and top quality graduates from many of Europe's finest universities.

The Collaborative Marketing scheme brings together a company with a marketing requirement, a marketing professional from the Business School and a qualified and experienced marketing graduate who work together to give the company the outcomes that it requires. The projects are practical in nature with the emphasis on implementation, and generally last between six months and two years.

Eligible businesses
The scheme is best suited to companies with greater than
20 employees, although professional firms with fewer employees have also benefited.

Scheme conditions
There are no specific conditions attached to the scheme, as each project is unique, but it is obvious that the company management must be prepared to collaborate for the scheme to deliver its potential. SMP is always happy to discuss potential projects without obligation on either side.
